The Rajiv Gandhi University community observed two-minute silence in the memory of those who gave their lives in the struggle for India’s independence near the Wall of Heroes at the university premises.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice chancellor, Prof. Saket Kushwaha, quoting from the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "The world has enough for everyone's needs, but not everyone's greed", has encouraged the students and youths of the country to contribute towards nation-building taking inspirations from our freedom fighters, “who gave their yesterday for our today and posterity”.
Professor, S.N. Singh, senior professor of the Department of History, said that this day “reminds us about the ideals and values those martyrs lived for”. Prof. Singh particularly remembered Mahatma Gandhi by reminding the participants of how Gandhi ji believed that revolutions can come peacefully too.
“There are misconception about Mahatma Gandhi in the minds of some people with regards his relations with Subash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh”, professor Singh added. According to him, Gandhi ji could not save Bhagat Singh from going to gallows because he was not a part of the British government. It was Subash Chandra Bose who himself gave Gandhi the tile of ‘Father of Nation’.
Co-ordinator of the programme, Prof. Nani Bath, highlighted the significance of the day. In his brief speech, Prof. Bath said that the nation needs to remember the jawans as well, who are not only guarding the territory of the country but are also defending the constitution of India and the honour of the president of India. He emphasized on the urgency of doing extensive research on the history of freedom movement in Arunachal Pradesh.
